Tips for staying in shape over the Christmas break

We all know how hard it can be to keep to our fitness routines over the summer holidays and Christmas festivities, and New Years's resolutions often include promises and goals about getting back into shape or eating healthier again, today I'm sharing 5 tips for staying in shape over the Christmas break so that you will feel healthier and more energetic come the new year.

This post was made possible by Chi Of Life a weight loss, health & wellness retreat on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland.

1: Eat well (choose the healthy options)

The best way to look after yourself over Christmas is to maintain a healthy diet. It's easy to see celebrations as a time to indulge in sweet treats and more alcohol than usual but by drinking plenty of water, limiting sugar and alcohol and choosing protein, good fats and natural unprocessed food, you will feel much less sluggish and will have more energy. Skipping the naughty food doesn't sound like a lot of fun but your energy levels will be a wonderful payoff.

2. Choose active leisure

With plenty of sunshine around, get outdoors and make the most of the nice weather. Summer holidays are a great time to spend quality time as a family and by making that quality time active instead of sedentary, there will be fitness benefits for the the whole family. Some great examples of active leisure activities are family bike rides, bush walks, backyard cricket, beach cricket, swimming pools and water slides, tennis, mini-golf, frisbee, family games of touch-football or oz-tag, ice-skating and the list goes on.

3.  Get up early

No one really feels like exercising too much on a hot summer day, so try beating the heat and getting up early while the air is still cooler. It might mean going to bed a little earlier but you'll feel energised and enjoy those exercise endorphins for the rest of the day.

4.  Try a HIIT workout

HIIT workouts are a super efficient way to burn fat, boost metabolism and get fitter and the best thing about them is that they can be completed in around 20 mins or even less. this means that you can quickly fit one in before or between all those Christmas season commitments. Another great feature of HIIT workouts is that they can be done in an air-conditioned living room at home which is perfect for those scorching summer days.

5.  Start a new active hobby

Ever wanted to try surfing, bodyboarding or stand-up paddleboarding? The Christmas summer holidays are the perfect time to give it a go! All of these activities are fantastic exercise and are loads of fun. We tried stand-up paddleboarding during summer holidays two years ago and Olly fell in love with it. He ended up buying his own and thinks it's the best core workout ever - I have to agree! The best thing about active hobbies like surfing are that they are so enjoyable that you don't even realise that you are exercising. Make it one of your goals to give something new a try this holiday season.

It's easy to over-indulge during the festive season but by trying a few of the above you should hopefully be able to stay in shape, keep your energy levels high and start the new year off in a positive way.
